HORNBEAM TREES - one of my go to trees for narrow spots or to make a spectacular feature in the garden. I use them as clipped features trees, hedges & they work a treat pleached….. easy to grow, preferring a protected spot and easily trimmed due to their fine and delicate branches. Winter past I helped plant around 50 bare root hornbeam trees on a friends farm and when I was down yesterday I couldn't believe how well they have done, 100% success rate! I remember when planting these that the ground was so rocky and hard and lots of the saplings were manhandled with the roots forced into any crack we could make, I really didn't expect all of them to survive like this, we even potted up spares as we were expecting ones not to make it!
