Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was founded on 29th August 1964, on the auspicious day of Shri Krishna Janmashtami , with the blessings of the Saint shakti of Bharat. The objective of the VHP is to organise- consolidate the Hindu society and to serve – protect the Hindu Dharma.

The decision to form Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was taken in a meeting held in Sandipani Sadhanalaya, Bombay on the Janmashtami day in 1964. The meeting was attended by various important dignitaries, saints and social workers.

It was decided at the meeting that the name of the proposed organisation shall be Vishva Hindu Parishad and that a world convention of Hindus be held at Prayag (Allahabad) during Kumbha Mela of 1966 to launch the organisation.
