Unlike most police departments, Rhode Island State Troopers do not wear a traditional badge. Instead, they wear a set of numbers stamped in brass, placed onto a piece of black fabric, with red piping on the edges, over the left breast on the uniform shirt.

The patch that adorns all Rhode Island State Police uniforms today was designed 50 years ago by Lieutenant Hugh J. Frayne (ret.), #57, Class of 1946, while assigned to the Scituate Barracks. Many designs were submitted, but this design was preferred by troopers and Colonel Walter E. Stone, who made it regulation on uniforms in June of 1966.
There are some indications that in the 1920s – 30s they may have worn a simple uniform shoulder patch made of black felt with red lettering that read, “State Police”. In recent times someone has reproduced such patches to be sold to collectors.
