Most critics consider the Guitar series as the final transition from the analytical cubism to the synthetic cubism. However, they cover a much longer period of the artist’s work; it can be said that Guitars generally represent Picasso’s Cubism. One of the first collages made of newspapers fragments dates back to November/December 1912.

In this lesson we will be discussing more about one of Picasso's major inventions, namely COLLAGE (a collage is a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing).

The abstracted trellis pattern of this wallpaper, which Picasso also pasted into his first papier collés, recalls the network of straps in letter-rack compositions, one of its joints acting as the hook for the guitar.

Pablo Picasso’s Guitar, Sheet Music and Glass is generally thought to have been made as a response to Georges Braque’s Fruit Dish and Glass. Both works bring a new tool into the already-complex collection of Cubist techniques of representation — the use of collage.
