The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit includes 8 handler and K-9 teams. There are no cross trained teams. In addition to performing drug searches, they also can provide backup to deputies, locate suspects and victims, and find evidence at or near crime scenes.

King County Search Dogs (KCSD)is the largest K9 search unit in Washington. K-9/handler teams train to national standards in Airscent (finding any human in a large area) and Trailing (following the path of a specific person) and participate in missions throughout the State.

King County Search Dog teams are deployed by County Sheriffs or State Emergency Management to help locate missing persons and evidence.

Specialized units include TAC30 (formerly known as SWAT), hostage negotiation, bomb disposal, and more. The need for these services has increased in the past few years due to threats of terrorism. Most members of our specialized units are cross-trained to serve many functions.

With over 1200 employees, the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) serves needs of over half million people in unincorporated areas and twelve contract cities. KCSO also provides police departments for the Muckleshoot Tribe, Metro and Sound Transit and the King County International Airport.
