The Boilermakers have played a key role in history. We built machinery to construct the Panama Canal and thousands of ships to help win two world wars. We are a progressive, forward-thinking union that has established national funds for pensions, health and welfare, and an annuity trust.

The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers represents more than 50,000 skilled craftsmen and women and industrial workers who work in heavy industry, shipbuilding, manufacturing, railroads, cement, mining, and related industries.

Through subsequent mergers, the union today stands as the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, AFL-CIO. While it’s not recorded when Boilermakers began working in field construction, by the early 1900s, members were building the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

As with all unions, the leadership of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers comes from its members. Members elect local lodge officers and delegates to the Consolidated Conventions held every five years.

The Constitution of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers is the primary governing document of the union. It governs the actions of the International and local lodges, as well as those of all officers, staff, and members at all levels of the union.

Boilermakers have helped to power, build and transport the U.S. and Canada for over 100 years. As we look toward the future, the union is always seeking skilled and dedicated men and women to learn the Boilermaker craft through our apprenticeship training.
