"Sources tell CBS Sports — and UNC confirmed this week — that there is no fully executed and signed contract between Belichick and UNC," Jones posted on X. "And industry sources say that could lead to a legal gray area about how much, if any, of a buyout there would be if Belichick left for the pros.

Bill Belichick was introduced as UNC’s coach last month, on Dec. 11. He had not signed his contract, though, until this week.

Belichick, 72, was hired as Hall of Fame coach Mack Brown's replacement after the Tar Heels finished the season at 6-7 with a bowl loss to UConn. Brown, the winningest coach in program history, led UNC to six straight bowl appearances in six seasons.

Outside of the Lombardi family, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach has hired former Browns coach Freddie Kitchens (offensive coordinator), son Steve (defensive coordinator), former CFL coach Chris Jones (defensive assistant), Billy Miller (general position assistant) and Moses Cabrera (strength and conditioning).

Bill Belichick will make his college football coaching debut on Monday, September 1 when the North Carolina Tar Heels take on the TCU Horned Frogs. Kickoff for the game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Patriots legend will be entering his first season in Chapel Hill.
