Until CES 2019, G-Sync was technically a hardware standard: Monitors that support G-Sync have a processor chip in them that communicates directly with an Nvidia graphics card to adjust framerate.

In 2019, though, Nvidia opened its G-Sync technology to some compatible FreeSync displays, offering an adaptive refresh rate to not only a lot more displays, but a lot of cheaper ones, too.
