The Sultan Mohamed IV gifted the territory of Ifni to Spain after the conclusion of the African War in 1860. However, it wasn't annexed until 1934.

In 1956, King Mohamed V launched an attack on Sidi Ifni to reclaim the territory, sparking the Ifni War which resulted in Spain ceding control of Ifni to Morocco in 1969.
