According to two new United Nations reports, renewable energy has passed a “positive tipping point,” and solar power is now 41% cheaper than fossil fuels.

The majority of newly commissioned renewable energy is more cost-effective for electricity generation than most fossil fuels worldwide, a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) showed on Tuesday.

Yet no matter how you look at it, the new economic reality is here. The overwhelming majority of new renewable power projects are now cheaper than their new fossil fuel counterparts. The most rapid growth and highest returns in the coming decade will likely be in the technologies that enable the renewable transition.
