The sky may have caught your attention recently with some uncommon clouds over our area, making it a great time to learn the difference between many types of clouds.

"Clouds can grow very tall or appear flat as a pancake. They are typically white in color but can also be different shades of gray or brilliant yellow, orange, or red.

We’re going to break down the basic types of clouds including cirrus, cumulus, stratus and cumulonimbus. Some you will see on a blue sky day while others might rain on your parade.

When you see cirrostratus clouds, you can normally expect some type of rain or snow storm within the next 24 hours. The best way to describe them is as "delicate cloud streaks".

Stratus, cumulus, nimbostratus, and cumulonimbus are your low-level clouds. These types of clouds have the highest potential to rain, and before long, snow.

Cumulus clouds typically are around 1,000 to 7,000ft up in the sky. Cumulus clouds develop on clear, sunny days when the sun heats the ground directly below.
