It has been 29 years since Amber Hagerman was abducted in Texas and killed, inspiring the nationwide system that alerts citizens to missing children, usually thought to be in imminent danger.

Monday is AMBER Alert Awareness Day. It also marks 29 years since Hagerman was abducted. “The day serves as an annual reminder that hope can come from heartbreak,” according to the center.

The Amber alert system is named in honor of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington.
