There is an ambitious long-term plan for Cedar, who cannot be released back into the wild even after his leg injury mends.

Moose - actually the largest of our native deer species - have a complex role to play, the DNR said. Chief among those is what they eat: Aspen, birch and balsam fir.

The moose was captured on a Snapshot Wisconsin trail camera in Vilas County in June, the DNR said. While several moose are spotted each year, they are a "rare species" in the state.
