Elk Horn, Iowa has one of the highest populations of Danes, per capita, in the country. I am Danish-American, sn these folks are hard core on their heritage. Locals actively cook Danish food, and several speak the language. There is a Facebook site where local residents keep in touch with Dansoh nationals, and I know that groups host each other back and forth. There is a wonderful, authentic windmill that was brough over by boat and reassembled there in town. It is massive, and is in the process of having the sail redone in the last year. There is a lovely winery, a great gift shop attached to the windmill, and some good food in town. It’s only a few miles north of Highway 80, so it barely takes you off your path to Omaha. In summary, yes, visit Elk Horn. And get your picture taken ($0.00) at the Danish village of Kimballton just three miles further north.
