The broader Birmingham metropolitan area had a population of 1,192,583 as of 2020, and is the largest metropolitan area in Alabama as well as the 47th-most populous in the US. The Birmingham-Cullman-Talladega Combined Statistical Area had an estimated population of 1,376,853 in 2024. Birmingham serves as an important regional hub and is associated with the Deep South, Piedmont, and Appalachian regions of the nation.
